The Mac Lawyer Using Macs in Law Firms | Attorney Ben Stevens

Happy Anniversary to Rocket Matter

Posted in Software

The Mac Lawyer would like to wish a happy anniversary to my good friends at Rocket Matter, as it has been two years since their public launch.  My firm has been using Rocket Matter from almost the very beginning, and we believe it to be one of the premier online case management systems for attorneys.

As part of their anniversary celebration, Rocket Matter has launched Rocket Matter Professional Services, which can help minimize downtime as firms migrate from their old software to this Software as a Service (SaaS) platform.  If you want to know more about Rocket Matter, you can visit their website or visit with them in person at Virtual LegalTech, LegalTech New York, or the ABA Tech Show.

    Ben -
Thank you for all your support. You have been an integral part of our success. You believed in us from the very beginning and we’re forever grateful. Once upon a Mac v PC article in the ABA Journal, you stuck your neck out for us and the PC guy pushed back. You’ll be happy to know the PC guy is still a PC guy, but he’s also a Rocket Matter guy as of this week. See you in Chicago!

Ben – I am at a cross-roads on the use of Clio vs. RM. I like the Client connect on Clio but not the billing. Experience?

    Chuck,
I had a similar dilemma. But about two weeks ago I decided to go with RM and I could not be happier. The product is easy to use, the billing looks great, and the customer service and help videos are amazing. They even took 15% off when I allowed them to bill me for the year. This is the best purchase I made for my firm.

I’m currently working with a practice to work out how they can better manage things using either software or a web-based service. I have been unable to find any service which is able to fully support currencies other than the US dollar (although Clio allows changing to a limited number of other currencies on a per-bill basis).
I realise that the US is overwhelming the biggest market, but I wondered if any other readers of the site were aware of products that could fully support other countries.
    Thanks!

I am curious how many attorneys/firms are using services like RM, Clio, etc. Does RM publish how many subscribers they have currently?

As I try to navigate the IT issues for a small office/solo practitioner, two factors weigh heavily on my mind … simplicity and cost/overhead. I current use MicroSoft products (Dell), MS Office, Quickbooks, and a couple 1 TB external hard drives to take care of all of these things, and I am reasonably satisfied with it.
These things appeal to me … online document backup (Dropbox), Quickbooks online, MobileMe and/or RM or Clio for case management, time-keeping, calendaring, etc., but taken together, it would add a couple thousand dollars a year to my overhead … not very practical for a solo. At the same time, it does not sound appealing or easy or simple to work with or integrate all of these online services.
My temptation for paperless and mobile is outweighed by the practical need/want/desire for a simple all-in-one, integrated, online solution … which includes timekeeping, expenses, billing, accounting, as well as case management, contacts, calendaring, and document management, with a Dropbox-like syncing ability to all of my computers and devices so that I can keep things locally and securely in the clouds … at a price that makes sense.

I am considering a move from PC Law to either Rm or Clio. Dell PC system, with Office 2007. I use GTD principles to keep organized and currently use (and am happy with) the Netcentrics GTD Outlook Add-In. I am also experimenting with Nirvana as aWeb-based GTD friendly task organizer.
Any thoughts on RM v. Clio as far as integrating GTD? I am especially concerned with the ability to roll email into tasks or calendar events, which is not easily done (yet?) with Nirvana and Outlook.
    Thanks.

If you want a true email integration within your practice management software. You should try Houdini Esq product (www.houdiniesq.com). It automatic bills your email activities using its email client or through its Outlook Add-in. With its Outlook Add-in, it also synchronizes your calendar and contacts, and lets you link email to matter with a single click.
